Quick answer. A Notice to Appear lists immigration allegations and charges. Save every page, verify whether a court case has been filed, and check all hearing notices. Receiving the document does not by itself tell you which defenses are available.

Read the papers together

An NTA and a later hearing notice may contain different kinds of information. Keep the envelope, delivery record, and any documents you signed. Make a short list of the dates you received them. Do not assume that a missing hearing date means there is no case or that you can disregard future notices.

Look for errors in your name, A-number, entry history, and the government's allegations. Mark questions for counsel rather than changing the original document. An attorney can review whether DHS has properly charged removability and what admissions or legal positions are appropriate.

Confirm the next obligation

Check official EOIR case information and the court's notices. If they conflict, promptly seek clarification from the court and counsel. An online status check is not a substitute for a hearing notice or a judge's order. Follow the required address-change process; telling USCIS or the Postal Service alone may not update the immigration court.

Prepare for a useful case review

Gather the NTA, hearing notices, passports, entry records, prior applications, and any previous judge or BIA decisions. Include criminal case records even if a charge was dismissed. Explain whether you are detained, have an upcoming ICE check-in, or fear return to your country.

Make a separate list of family relationships and possible immigration options. A pending petition does not answer every question about court proceedings. Ask who will handle the hearing, who is responsible for filings, and what must happen before the next date.

Frequently asked questions

Does the NTA mean I have already been ordered removed? An NTA is a charging document. Check separately for any earlier removal order and the current court history.

Should I wait until I have every document? No. Share the notice and next deadline first, then supplement the file.
